John Taverner should not be confused with the contemporary composer Sir John Tavener (born in 1944). Although Taverner did not compose keyboard music himself, the immense popularity of his setting of the words "In Nomine..." in the mass which he wrote using the plainsong theme "Gloria tibi Trinitas" inspired the composition of a sizeable collection of keyboard pieces by a variety of composers. Even Purcell, nearly 200 years later, wrote two In Nomines — although these were for string ensembles. Each of the sections of Taverner's Gloria Tibi Trinitas Mass was based on this same plainsong. The transcription for keyboard of the Dona Nobis section given here is therefore an instrumental In Nomine in all but name.
