Allemande from "L'Art de toucher le Clavecin"
Premier Prélude
Second Prélude

The great collection of more than 200 pieces for solo harpsichord which form François Couperin's 24 Ordres is a monument to "Couperin le Grand", the undisputed master of the French school of harpsichord composers. Many are technically undemanding (especially when compared with Rameau's pieces) but all are melodious, inventive and of course elegant. They have been singled out for admiration by, for example, Bach, Brahms and Ravel. Since they are widely available in print to buy or to borrow I am not including any of them here. Instead you will find some of the pieces which Couperin included in his introduction to harpsichord playing, "L'Art de toucher le Clavecin", which he published in 1716.

These pieces which Couperin says were especially composed for inclusion in the treatise consist of an Allemande and eight Préludes. In due course I plan to add the remaining six pieces.

It is excellent to be able to tell you that you can download a free pdf copy of the entire work from this splendid site. The file includes all the musical examples and the nine pieces. Moreover you can read Couperin's advice on phrasing, touch, the execution of ornaments, and even his fingering.
